What is a Bar Code?

A unique code that belongs to only one on the entire globe. Most commonly it is known as : EAN/GTIN-13 (European Article Number) is being used in Asian, European, the Middle East & in the rest of the world other than the USA & Canada.

The UPC is a unique 12-digit number & formula designed for use by a non-profit called the UCC (now known as GS1) in the early '70s. This UPC allows retailers to easily track sales of your product within their inventory system. Later in the '70s in Europe, the EAN was created & used by the EAN foundation in a similar fashion, this is a 13-digit number & format. The EAN foundation later merged globally with the UCC and is now known as GS1. (Global Standards One)

There are 2 formats that work together to cover the globe, the UPC & the EAN format.

MYTH & FACTS OF BARCODE BEGINNING WITH PREFIX 890

Barcode prefix 890 is just numbers that come directly from GS1 India out of More than 114 GS1 offices worldwide, Each country GS1 office has different prefix no.’s to indicate & specify the country of origin (find few examples as a reference as follows: 060-139 are a prefix of GS1-US, 629 of the GS1-United Arab Emirates, 955 of GS1-Malaysia)

Many people mistakenly believe that the first few digits of the barcode numbers show the country of origin of the product. However, the barcode number says NOTHING accurate about the country of origin of the product. The only thing that these first few digits show is the country of origin of the number. So in reality, products that come from India can have any barcode number on them.

If you want to demonstrate that your product is made in India, then the best way to do this is to print “Made in India” or similar on the product. This is an advertising claim and must be provable if challenged. (Some manufacturers also print “Made in India” directly above the barcode to help customers).

The myth of the barcode number showing the country of origin of the product is an old myth that has been thoroughly debunked. Please see this Snopes article on the origins of this myth as well as a debunking of it.

All barcodes and barcode systems are designed for international use, so there are virtually no restrictions based on the country of origin worldwide. Any specific examples of stores placing any type of restrictions on barcodes can be seen here.
